The Himalayan Fault lines of '62
I am writing a blog after almost a year.
I have been an avid reader since childhood when I was christened bookworm by my siblings and parents because of the time I spent on books.
This one is about a book that is close to my heart. Titled Dividing Lines- Contours Of India-China Conflict, it is written by a friend and is due to hit the bookstores by the end of the month.
Published by Platinum Press, an arm of Leadstart Publishing, it is a well researched and lucidly written book that takes the reader to a turbulent period in young Independent India's history. The two Asian Giants, India and China shared not only a border, but also culture, religion and a long history of peaceful Coexistence. Fifty years ago, all that changed and the ancient civilizations clashed over a border dispute. It ended in a defeat for India and remains a source of national shame. In this book, the author, Dr KN Raghavan, tries to trace the origins and reasons for this debacle. He goes beyond the boundary issue and puts the prelude as well as the sequelae of the conflict in proper perspective. The tinted glasses through which India looked at this War are off and he gives an honest and impartial account of the Himalayan blunder or 62. The fault lines have far reaching consequences on the power play in the subcontinent. Written in a simple format, it takes the reader through the various mistakes made at different levels in the Indian bureaucracy as well as military decision making. It is a must read for students of history and international affairs as well as the average 'Aam Aadmi' of India. Aas a nation remembers the War on its 50th anniversary, the author gives an impartial but impressively accurate account of the events leading to the cataclysmic event and its aftermath. For a debut writer, the Herculean effort is definitely a laudable one. Kudos to the author.
Highly recommended.
